SARKAR Movie Release, Controversy and Business
Sarkar the most awaited movie of the year in Tamil cinema. Since the movie was third collaboration between Vijay And A R Murugadoss , the film had huge expectations. Their earlier two films Thuppaki and Kaththi were Huge hits in Vijay’s career. On the flip side there was a script theft accusation against the director leading to lots of speculations. Amongst all this the film was released this Deepavali to much fan fare. The movie took a bumper opening at the worldwide Box office creating some new records. The movie Breached past the 30 crore mark in Tamil Nadu alone in its very first day . More such opening day records were created in places like Kerala, Karnataka and overseas. In two weeks the film has said to be grossed around 200 crores.
Controversy :
But that credit would not go to the lead actor and the director alone. That’s because In spite of the mixed reviews the movie had a great patronage thanks to the Tamil Nadu govt. Just like BJP got credited for the Huge success of Vijay’s earlier movie Mersal. This time The State govt led be It’s chief minister edappadi K Palaniswami took up the responsibility of promoting the movie By protesting against the movie for some of its content. Movie as such is said to be a strong political film with strong accusations against the ruling govt. This didn’t go too well with the State govt. Which led to a lot of backlash, violent protest at the cinema halls creating chaos in the State. This led to general public getting curious about the film, which in turn gave the film a much needed boost at the Box Office.
Is it really a win-win all situation?
So Actor Vijay seems to have two back to back 200cr grosser’s and his stardom seems to be gone to another level. But does this mean Tamil cinema has been flourishing? Sadly it’s not. Even with sarkar though the film has been doing great business, it’s still not a profitable venture for all involved with it. That’s is because of the High budget of the movie and on top of that the prize that it was sold for. How can it be a good business model if the people associated with it make just 10-15% profit? That is exactly the case with these big films made in Tamil cinema. If a producer makes a film for 100 crores in Tamil cinema, he/she should be making at least 50 crore profit. But sadly that is not the case in Tamil cinema.
Reason and solution:
The sole reason for the mess is over budgeting. There seems to be no proper planning when it comes to the most important aspect of film making in Tamil Cinema, Budgeting. Unless and until the top Actors in the industry are paid appropriately or agree to share the profit of the business, this problem is sure to persist. This being said we have 2.O India’s costliest film is slated for release in ten days time. Let’s see how it performs at the box office. With close to a $100 million riding on it, a lot is being expected.
