First baby born through dead uterus transplant

There are 130 million babies born worldwide a year, but have you thought about how many are born naturally? Not all women have the ability to give birth which may be due to many genetically reasons. There are many ways that women can have children thanks to our medical advancement. Now, doctors have successfully found another way! Uterus transplant. This is the beginning of a new choice women can make.

In Brazil, a woman who had died from a brain haemorrhage at the age of 45 donated her uterus to another woman. The woman had a genetic disorder which meant that she was born with no uterus. There have been many cases involving a deceased donor uterus transplant that many people from different countries have tried. Unfortunately, none of the other nations such as US, Czech Republic and Turkey have been successful.

The woman, aged 32, wanted to have a child and this

was possible due to the transplant.

The procedure lasted ten and a half hours

in total and involved the doctors to connect

the veins, arteries, ligaments and vaginal canals.

The women had to remain in intensive care for two days and then another six days on a specialised transplant ward. To prevent her body rejecting the new organ, she took five immunosuppression drugs. This was combined with other treatments that were needed to avoid blood clotting and infections. After the doctors approved of the procedure, they inserted the fertilised eggs through IVF.

A normal pregnancy lasts about two hundred and eighty days or forty weeks, however the women’s gestation period last for thirty-five weeks and

three days. On the 5th of December, her daughter was born by a caesarean section and she weighed 2.55 kilos. When the doctors delivered the baby, the transplanted uterus was removed, and it displayed no irregularities. Dani Ejzenberg, at Sao Paulo University in Brazil led the team and he claims that this is a medical milestone. “This creates the possibility of childbirth for many infertile women with access to suitable donors and the needed medical facilities,” said Ejzenberg.

Medicine and technology is growing rapidly, and this event is one of the many cases that proves our strides in the medical field. Brazil has successfully given birth to someone who had a deceased donor uterus transplant which has given more hope to humanity.
